Residents of Thokoza in Ekurhuleni, SA were shocked when they found a dead infant dumped on a rubbish heap, inside a plastic bag on Saturday.

According to Malefu Sithole, a resident in the area, a group of people found the dead baby on a heap of rubbish.

Malefu went to see what was happening.

"I screamed when I saw the tiny corpse in the plastic bag.

Next to the body there were ashes. You could see that whoever dumped the baby tried to burn the infant.

Thuli Mkhaliphi (41) said she failed to understand why people have illegal abortions when the law allows them to have legal abortions.

"Whoever did this should have looked for help," Thuli said.

Simphiwe Sigudu from the Thokoza youth crime prevention desk said he couldn't eat after what he saw. "This was a horrible thing and I'm wondering how many deaths are still undiscovered in our areas.

"I hope cops will find the suspect," Simphiwe said.

Katlehong police spokesman Captain Mega Ndobe said a case of concealment of birth had been opened.

Anyone with information about the incident should report it to the police.
