Just after she gave birth, Innocentia Khoza (17) was told by nurses that her baby was dead.
Innocentia gave birth at Shongwe Hospital near Malelane, Mpumalanga, on Friday two weeks ago and nurses apparently refused to let her see her baby.
Then they said the body was lost as there were too many corpses in the mortuary.
Three days later, Innocentia was shown a body said to be that of her baby but it was only in its fourth month of development.
"My baby was moving and kicking shortly before I went into labour," she said.
"I was shocked after I gave birth when a nurse told me my baby had died.
"They refused to show me the dead baby."
She was discharged and returned with her family the next day to get answers.
But they were told to return on Monday as the mortuary was closed for the weekend.
"On Monday, they told us they had lost my baby's body," said Innocentia.
"They said there were too many bodies in the mortuary. They called us on Tuesday to say the body had been found.
"It was in a private morgue, 30km from the hospital."
But there was another shock for Innocentia.
When she and her mum, Goodness Khoza (47), arrived at the morgue, they were given a four-month-old foetus. Goodness said she nearly collapsed.
"They tried to fool us with a foetus that didn't have legs, eyes or hair."
Mpumalanga health spokesman Ronnie Masilela said: "It's a painful thing that happened to the family.
"I assure you the matter will be investigated."
