There was drama at the Harare magistrate court last week after a man suspected of armed robbery fell down in the dock as the charges were being read out to him. The 53-year-old Dreka Felix Katemba had been standing when he suddenly fell down and he started making some knocking sounds in the dock.
The State, led by prosecutor Sarah Bosha had to apply for it to proceed in terms of Mental Health Act to allow Dreka to be examined by two medical doctors to ascertain his mental faculties. In another court where Dreka had appeared, the magistrate had also ordered that he be examined by two medical doctors.
Dreka appeared in court facing several cases, ranging from armed robbery, robbery of motor vehicle and unlawful possession of a firearm. In one case, Dreka is said to have acted alone while on the other offences, he allegedly worked in cahoots with two colleagues, Rusty January (19) and Marko Chingoma (29). The gang was remanded in custody as they are facing very serious offences and their cases have been set for trial on different dates. The several cases were being heard in different courts as Dreka was moved from one court to another, for his initial appearances.
State allegations are that, armed with a 38 Special Taurus Brazil Revolver, the gang targeted some four motorists, stealing their cars and other valuables. It is said that they firstly stole a Toyota Starlet from Petros Mhlanga, a BMW from Muchineripi Chimedza, Honda Fit from Talent Mhondiwa and Mazda Alexa from Tinashe Mukina.
Suggestions are that in all their escapades, the gang used the revolver to scare off their victims before CID detectives finally nabbed them. It is alleged that Dreka was seen by the detectives as he was walking along Lyton Road before boarding a kombi to Mufakose. The cops ordered the driver of the kombi to stop and they arrested Dreka whom they searched and found a revolver with five rounds of ammunition in his possession, concealed in a plastic glove in a black satchel.
It is the State's indications that he was asked if he was certified to possess the firearm but he failed to give a satisfactory response. The detectives eventually managed to nab Dreka's alleged accomplices.
