Nketa man assaults own mother over food

A MAN from Nketa Suburb in Bulawayo allegedly assaulted his mother after she refused to give him sadza, which she had left in a pot, telling him the portion was for his sibling.
The man, Lancelot Sibanda, appeared before the Western Commonage provincial magistrate, Willard Mafios Moyo, facing charges of physical abuse.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and the matter went for a full trial yesterday.
Sibanda, in his defence, told the court that he had no intention of assaulting his mother, but was only trying to escape her bite and grip on his arm.
"When she bit me on my arm I pushed her against a cupboard, where pots and plates fell on top of her," he said.
"I assume that's where she sustained the injuries from."
In her testimony, Sibanda's mother Sifelani Gama, said he punched her with fists leading her to sustaining a swollen face and bleeding from her left ear.
"He started punching me all over the body till I bled," she said.
As her testimony became emotional, Gama wept in the court room, before telling her son that God was going to punish him.
"My son you can deny before the court, but surely my God will punish you," she warned.
Gama's testimony was corroborated by her daughter, Nokuthula, who also insisted that her brother assaulted their mother
"He said he wanted food that was in the pot, but I told him he should go and talk to mum. That's when he told me he does not
want to see her face," Nokuthula said.
"My mother then asked me not to respond to him since he was drunk, that is when he threw the pots down, smashing them using his feet."
Prosecuting, Kingston Mukanganwi told the court that on October 6, Sibanda came home from a beer drink demanding something to eat from his sister Nokuthula, who then referred him to her mother.
A misunderstanding ensued, leading to him assaulting his mother.
