On Monday morning, the people of a village in Malamulele, Limpopo, SA, woke up to the news that a 37-year-old mentally ill man had beheaded his own father with a panga.
He then went on to hit his grandmother with a log of firewood and killed her as well.
Apparently he had not had his medicine for a week.
The brother of the man said his brother was staying with their mother in Venda until about a month ago, when their mum insisted he move in with his father.
"When he came here, he was good friends with my father.
"They would do his washing together and sit around and talk," said the brother.
He said his brother had been mentally ill for over 18 years.
"He was fine when he took his medicine. But without his medicine, he became somebody else.
"After killing our father, he went to our grandmother's house and attacked her," said the man's brother.
The 65-year-old mother said she received a call from her brother and her niece to say her son had sworn at them.
"I knew his illness was taking over. I planned to come on Monday to take him to the hospital for his medicine but I was too late," she said.
Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the suspect was arrested.
