Mina Radebe (61) claims that something invisible is living in her wardrobe and makes a noise like the rumble of distant thunder, followed by scratching and a loud bang.
At night the noise is said to get worse.
Mina, who lives at Stoffel Park, Mamelodi East in Tshwane, SA, bought the wardrobe for R3500 (US$350) in May and says the mysterious noise began seven days later.
She was too scared to sleep in her bedroom so she slept in the dining room.
She said: "I took all the clothes out of the wardrobe hoping to find something but there was nothing and even when there are no clothes in the wardrobe it still makes a noise."
Her daughter has moved out of the shack and her neighbours have stopped visiting because they are afraid.
A neighbour, Dimakatso Mokopeng (32), said that every time she visited Mina, she heard the strange noise coming from the wardrobe and she got so scared that she stopped visiting.
Mina told Daily Sun: "I have prayed alone and with a group but still the noise is there.
"I was thinking of burning the wardrobe but I'm afraid that even if I burn it and buy another one the noise will still be there."
