Gay South African couple Tshepo Modisane and Thoba Sithole, both 27, celebrated the first ever traditional gay wedding in the country.
They both arrived in identical Mercedes-Benz C-class cars in traditional attire at Siva Sungum Hall in KwaDukuza on the KZN north coast on Saturday.
Before the wedding a bull was slaughtered and there was a lunch at Tshepo's house at KwaThema in Springs, Ekurhuleni.
Residents came in their numbers to support them.
Tshepo told Daily Sun that the slaughtering was so that ancestors could bless the wedding.
Audit manager Tshepo said he met the love of his life, IT systems engineer Thoba, in Durban a few years ago.
"We lost contact and in 2011 bumped into each other in Joburg and rekindled our friendship. We later fell in love. We want to love and live freely without anyone judging us. What makes us proud is our parents' support."
The couple are planning to have two children through surrogacy.
The wedding attracted lots of media attention.
Thoba's mum Lindiwe Dladla (53) of Maphumulo in KZN said most of her family did not come as they felt the gay wedding was a disgrace to their Zulu tradition.
"This thing of gays is not familiar to us as Zulus. When Thoba was young I used to hear about it on radio," she said.
"I often prayed that none of my three sons, including Thoba, would be gay. At first his condition really affected me. I later realised there's no dustbin where I could throw him away."
Guests came from as far as Botswana. Among them was Thoba's friend Phenyo Setlhoka (26), who said: "I admire them for taking such a brave step. I wish them all the best. They have also encouraged us."
The wedding was conducted by Pastor Tankiso Mokoena from the Apostolic Church at Umlazi. "I urge society to support these two men as they enter the difficult stage of marriage. We're not here to judge but to share their joy."
Tshepo's mum, Thembi Mlangeni (47), told Daily Sun she was only there to support her son.
