A one-week old baby boy was stolen on Tuesday at Parirenyatwa Hospital, Zimbabwe while his mother was buying food.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Paul Nyathi yesterday said police were now hunting for the unknown baby snatcher.

"On 26 March at around 9 o’ clock in the morning,  it  is alleged that Priscilla Mangwiro, 34 of Franscot Farm in Shamva was discharged  from Parirenyatwa Maternity Hospital  with  a one week-old-baby boy," he said.

"She then went to sit on a bench outside the hospital ward and it is alleged that there were two unknown ladies who also sat on the same bench."

Supt Nyathi said around 2.30pm, Mangwiro gave her baby to one of the women.

"It is believed that these women had offered to assist Priscilla as she went to buy some food. Priscilla came back after about 30 minutes."

"She tried to check for them but could not find these ladies and a report was made to the police and investigations are in progress," Supt Nyathi said.

He appealed to mothers to always seek assistance from hospital authorities.

"We appeal to hospital and clinic authorities to ensure that the only people who have got genuine business to do with their facilities are allowed to sit on their benches or mingle with mothers who would have given birth or are expecting," he said.

"We appeal to mothers to put the security of their babies first and they should not trust strangers."
