A day-old infant was found dumped in a litter bin in Mutare city centre, Zimbabwe.
The infant, who was eventually whisked away by the Mars Ambulance Services team, was found wrapped in a plastic with no clothes on and shivering.
The time the baby was dumped could not be established as well as how its mother managed to place him/her into a bin and went away unnoticed in broad daylight.
Mutare City Council's refuse collection department had already emptied the bins for the day when the baby was discovered.
There were conflicting reports at the time of going to Press, with some people saying the baby was still alive, while others were saying it died hours after being taken to Mutare Provincial Hospital.
According to various people who spoke to The Weekender, the infant was found crying lying on top of refuse in a bin - thanks to a mentally challenged man who closed the bin and alerted passers-by.
"We strongly believe that the mother of the baby could be one of the ladies of the night because, seriously, this is one such weird place where one can dump a baby," said a hairdresser who requested anonymity.
Another onlooker, who preferred to be called Gerald, said: "This is unacceptable. It might be possible that the woman is among us here. We wonder why she chose to dump that baby in the CBD. We hope police will do their job to bring the culprit to book. That person does not stay far away."
Among people who gathered at the scene, were two women who cried calling for the prosecution of mothers who abort, dump or murder their children.
Police said they were investigating the matter.
