Man crashes car into swimming pool

A morning commute turned into an impromptu swim for a Cape Town motorist after his car landed in a swimming pool on Thursday.
Suhail Jaffer said he was on his way to work - travelling on Crawford Road in Crawford at 7.30am - when a silver Golf ran a stop sign at an intersection he was driving through.
"I remember I didn't want to hit them because I didn't want anyone to get hurt."
Jaffer swerved his car towards a Vibracrete wall, hoping it would soften the impact.
But as he tried to bring the car to a stop, it dipped into a drainage ditch before going airborne and flying through the wall.
One minute he was landing in a clutter of rubble, the next his car was sliding into a swimming pool on the other side of the wall.
"The water started coming in, and I had to act quickly," he said.
As the Toyota Corolla started sinking, Jaffer climbed on to the back seat and flung open the door before paddling to the side of the pool.
A resident at the house, who did not give his name, said he woke up to a loud bang followed by a big splash.
Jaffer said he was shaken but uninjured in the crash. His car was a waterlogged wreck once it had been towed from the pool.
"What I don't get is why the person in the Golf didn't stop," he said. "She saw what happened, and couldn't have known that I wasn't hurt. I also made a big effort to try avoid putting their lives in danger."
Jaffer said he was assessing the damage to his car.
"Fortunately my insurance will be covering the costs."
The owner of the house said he was relieved nobody had been walking in the garden when Jaffer's car crashed through the wall.
He said rubble had flown in all directions and had left marks on the walls of his home.
Police confirmed that an accident report had been opened at the Lansdowne police station.
