Zimbabwean woman gives birth then hides baby in handbag

A 19-year-old woman believed to be a maid will spend the next nine months in prison after she gave birth to a pre-mature baby and put it in a wardrobe.
The baby later died due to the conditions it was put in and a lack of expert care.
Beaular Ndiweni of Pumula South, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe gave birth on 11 September.
After giving birth, she reportedly wrapped it in a piece of cloth, put it in a plastic bag and then inside a handbag.
She then placed the handbag in the wardrobe and did not bother to check on the baby.
Ndiweni had reportedly managed to keep the pregnancy under wraps from her employer.
She finally ran out of luck days after the incident after a foul smell engulfed the house.
On making enquiries with Ndiweni, the employer got no answer.
She later owed up to her heinous act and revealed that she had given birth and put the baby in the wardrobe.
On checking, the employer discovered the baby's body.
A report was made to the police.
The body was taken for a post mortem which concluded that it died due to the conditions it was put under and lack of expert care.
Ndiweni was then arrested.
Appearing before Western Commonage magistrate, Mrs Tancy Dube, the woman said she committed the offence because the baby was "fatherless".
"I don't know the father and no one was going to take care of her," she said.
The magistrate sent her to jail for an effective nine months.
