A newborn baby dumped in the pit toilet in the morning was heard crying hours later, at lunchtime.
The emergency services were called and the baby girl was rescued by 4pm. She was close to death but still alive.
"When we got there the baby wasn't crying, she was just moaning," said Johan Pieterse of the Tshwane Emergency Services.
"I believe it was God's hand from above who protected the child."
Pieterse said the child had inhaled the fumes for hours and her condition was still critical.
The emergency workers had to demolish the mud-walled toilet in Winterveldt, Tshwane.
Then they used a stepladder to get to the bottom of the pit and recover the baby girl.
Shocked residents told Daily Sun it occurred to them that the baby was in the pit toilet when they saw the mother was no longer pregnant but didn't have a baby with her.
"While they were talking to her, they heard the baby moaning in the toilet.
The woman said she had gone to the toilet in the morning."
Peter Chuene, a family spokesman and owner of the plot where the baby was found, said: "We don't really know what happened.
"We can't tell if it was deliberate or an accident.
"It's up to the police to investigate and find the truth. We thank the emergency services for their quick response."
Warrant Officer Liffi Ramatlo of the Loate police said no charges had been laid yet.
