A homeless man who returned a backpack containing $42,000 in cash and travellers cheques could soon buy himself a house thanks to crowd-sourced reward donations pouring in.
Glen James, who has been homeless since 2005, was honoured by police this week for flagging down an officer after finding the bag in Boston, in the US.
The act of honesty inspired 27-year-old Ethan Whittington, who is from Virginia and has never even been to Boston, to set-up a fundraising page for Mr James via gofundme.com.
'Let's all chip in and help this man change his life. Every little donation helps. Let's be reassured that there is still hope and humanity in our great nation,' he wrote, originally setting a target of $50,000.
After donations flooded in however – the total currently stands at $65,000 – he raised the target to $250,000 (£157,000), enough to buy Mr James a home of his own.
Mr James said returning the backpack had made him feel 'very, very good'.
'Even if I were desperate for money, I would not have kept even a penny of the money I found,' he said in a statement.
'I am extremely religious – God has always very well looked after me.'
