South African manufacturers are lobbying for their government to put a ban on Zimbabwean goods entering their country following restrictions put by the Zanu PF led government on imports from its neighbors.
Finance Minister, Patrick Chinamasa increased duty on a range of finished products in 2014, saying the importation of these goods was hurting the Zimbabwean manufacturing industry.
South African manufacturers say Zimbabwean measures are harming their business, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mike Bimha revealed on Monday.
Bimha said his South African counterpart, Rob Davies, had raised the issue at the Southern Africa Development Community(SADC) Council of Ministries held in Gaborone, Botswana, in March.
South Africa accounts for 48% of Zimbabwe's overall trade. Any measures against Zimbabwean goods by South Africa would further weaken the countries economy.
Bimha said he had to clarify to Davies that the measures were temporary and meant to help ailing companies in Zimbabwe get on their feet.
Local manufacturing industries specialising in soap, cooking oil, sugar and dairy products have benefited from the government induced protection measures.
