A 44-year-old man from Tsholotsho was burnt beyond recognition together with his maid when the house they were sleeping in caught fire.
The incident occurred on Monday night. Police officer commanding Lupane District, Chief Superintendent Johannes Chinembiri Govo identified the man as Kaunda Ncube and the woman as MaNcube.
"Kaunda arrived from South Africa carrying containers of fuel and he put them in one of the rooms in his house.
"It looks like the two went to sleep in their rooms and forgot to switch off the candle resulting in the house catching fire and the two were burnt beyond recognition," said Chief Supt Govo said.
Property worth thousands of dollars went up in smoke.
The incident was discovered by a neighbour, Ms Senzile Tshuma after she heard an explosion.
She then alerted other villagers and they teamed up and put out the fire before they reported the matter to the police.
When police arrived at the scene they found the two charred bodies of the victims lying in the rubble.
Chief Supt Govo said they were still investigating to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The two bodies were taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for a postmortem.
"We continue to urge people to desist from keeping explosives such petrol in their houses, especially during this time of the year when temperatures are very high to avoid the recurrence of such incidents in which lives are unnecessarily lost," said Chief Supt Govo.
