George Zimmerman, the man acquitted of murdering black teenager Trayvon Martin in the United States, has been questioned by police over an alleged argument involving a gun.

Police spokesman Zach Hudson said officers "were trying to figure out exactly what happened" in the incident and that a gun was present.

Police took Mr Zimmerman in for questioning after his former wife Shellie accused him of threatening her and her father with a gun.

She filed for divorce last week and was staying at her parents' home.

Mr Hudson said Mr Zimmerman was being questioned by police but did not provide any additional details.

Mr Zimmerman was acquitted on July 13 of murdering 17-year-old Trayvon Martin as he walked back to the townhouse where he was staying after buying snacks at a nearby convenience store.

The trial polarised and captivated the central Florida town of Sanford and the acquittal led to mass protests across the US.

Mr Zimmerman's life has been tumultuous since his acquittal.

Family friends say he left central Florida shortly after the trial and has been out of contact for more than a month.

Since being acquitted, the former neighbourhood watch volunteer has been caught speeding twice and has posted photographs of himself at the gun factory which makes the weapon he used to shoot Martin.
