A 10-year-old-girl has been admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare, Zimbabwe after losing an eye when she was attacked by a hyena near Mutiusinazita market in Chin'ombe village in Buhera South.
Four other villagers were attacked by the same hyena and were admitted at hospitals in Mutare and Murambinda.
Noria Musapukira was admitted for emergency surgery at Parirenyatwa Hospital on Wednesday afternoon after losing an eye and the upper part of her thigh.
Her other eye has also been severely injured.
The Grade 5 pupil at Muchuwa Primary School also suffered severe injuries on both hands as she tried to fight off the nocturnal animal.
The injured girl's mother, Mrs Musapukira said Noria and her elder sister were coming from the market around 5.30pm on Tuesday when they saw something which they suspected to be a baboon.
They soon realised that it was a dangerous animal when it made a laughing sound and started charging at them.
Noria is said to have fallen while trying to runaway from the hyena, which then pounced on her.
Other villagers and passersby ran to her rescue but the damage had already been done.
The same hyena also attacked four other people.
Buhera South National Assembly member, Joseph Chinotimba was on the bedside of the young girl with the mother as she was admitted at Parirenyatwa.
Chinotimba pledged to pay for Noria's bills at Parirenyatwa and other victims who are at Mutare General Hospital and Murambinda.
He appealed to the Parks and Wildlife Authority to move into the area which he said is infested with lions and hyenas.
He said the problem is especially worse this year due to drought.
