A 26-year-old says that for the past five months he has been waking up in a cold sweat because a ghost was shaking his cupboards and throwing his belongings around.
On Thursday last week, he couldn't take it anymore and decided to confess to a neighbour the dark secret he has been carrying around with him.
The suspect said he had killed a man and buried him in his backyard.
The suspect from Lothair, near Ermelo, Mpumalanga, SA, reportedly told a friend: "The man I killed haunts me every night. He will not leave me alone."
The friend doubted the story and asked for proof. When he was taken to the site of the burial, pieces of human hair started appearing in the soil after digging up the surface just a little .
Police spokesman Colonel Leonard Hlathi said the man handed himself over on Thursday and a police forensic unit started digging up the shallow grave on Friday.
Hlathi said: "They found a red and blue blanket wrapped around a body. "The suspect told the police that he killed the man with an axe in April or May after he attacked him."
According to neighbours, the alleged killer lived with the victim, who was last seen about five months ago. The suspect's uncle said: "He has been behaving strangely in the last few months and seemed to be losing his mind."
