There was chaos at the Shirley Evangelical Presbyterian Church near Elim, Mpumalanga, South Africa as people started itching and scratching.
Worshippers were taken to the Waterval Clinic for urgent treatment.
After her treatment at the clinic, Eunice Mayimele told of what happened when she sat down in the church.
"My legs under my dress started to itch terribly.
"It felt like lots of hot pins were piercing my skin repeatedly," Eunice said.
It was found later that worshippers were tormented by itchy powder from the vhulada or lekhwekhweta plant also known as the velvet bean or cowitch.
The powder was sprinkled on pews, chairs, the pulpit and even the reverend's velvet seat.
"The devil has entered into the Lord's house to cause disorder," said a shocked Reverend Motanti Mashangoane.
The outraged minister said that at least 11 people were affected by the powder.
"I fail to understand how a sane human being can think of sprinkling such a dangerous substance in the house of worship," Mashangoane said.
This is the latest in a series of nasty incidents including vandalism at the church.
On Friday, the church doors were broken again and the rail gate was welded so it couldn't close.
Dangerous spiky irons, which could possibly hurt people and damage cars, were welded on the rail.
When the minister brought a chemical expert and cops, they found a black mamba in the church.
The snake slithered out the church entrance and disappeared in the grass.
No suspect has been identified or arrested.
