A 59-year-old preschool teacher in California, USA, has been arrested for allegedly drugging her toddler students with an over-the-counter sleeping aid (Sominex).
Deborah Gratz, was arrested on felony charges of child endangerment Monday after police found evidence during a search of her Hollister, Calif., home.
A witness on Friday March 8, 2013 claimed to see Gratz placing a questionable substance into the drinking cups of several students, one and two-year-olds, at the Kiddie Academy preschool in Morgan Hill Friday morning, reported KTVU.
Administrators fired Gratz immediately and she admitted that the substance was Sominex, according to the school.
According to
netdoctor, Sominex tablets contain the active ingredient promethazine, which is a type of medicine called a sedating antihistamine.
Promethazine enters the brain in significant quantities and causes drowsiness. It decreases the time taken to fall asleep and increases the depth of sleep. This makes it helpful for the temporary relief of sleeping difficulties, for example if you have difficulty going to sleep or staying asleep because of disturbances to your normal routine.
One tablet should be taken by persons over 16 at bedtime or up to an hour after going to bed if you are having difficulty falling asleep - not children's nap times
