POLICE in Matabeleland North have arrested a truck driver, a Zimra official and a clearing agent for smuggling household goods and clothes worth thousands of dollars through Kazungula border post in Victoria Falls.
The goods included four beds, four upright refrigerators, four deep freezers, 109 drums containing new and second hand clothes, three sets of sofas, six mattresses, three plasma television sets, six car tyres and bags.
Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Namatirai Mashona confirmed the arrests yesterday.
She said the driver of the truck, Johannes Michael, 35, from Southwold in Bulawayo was charged with smuggling, while the clearing agent only identified as Maphosa, 24, was charged with assisting to smuggle.
She added that a Zimra official Peter Makhohliso, 40, is being charged with criminal abuse of office.
“Michael was driving a Scania truck and a containerised trailer with foreign number plates. He was coming from Botswana into Zimbabwe through Kazungula border post in Victoria Falls.
“On arrival at the border post, Michael met Maphosa of Chinotimba in Victoria Falls employed by Parnold Enterprises as a clearing agent. Maphosa approached Makhohliso, who then cleared the goods despite not being deployed for the duty. As a result no duty was paid,” said Sgt Mashona.
She said Michael was issued with a gate pass and drove towards the entry gate before he was stopped by a supervisor at the Kazungula border post, only identified as Kurauno.
“Kurauno discovered that the goods hadn’t been declared and no duty was paid. He ordered that the goods be offloaded. The value of the goods hasn’t been ascertained. The three have since been arrested.
“Michael is being charged with smuggling goods. Maphosa is being charged with assisting him, while Makhohliso is being charged with criminal abuse of office,” said Sgt Mashona.
