Rumours are sweeping social media that Finance Minister, Patrick Chinamasa’s son has been arrested with a large amount of US dollars stashed in the boot of his car.
He was reportedly nabbed at the Beitbridge border and some are putting the amount of cash he had at $7 million.
A Financial Gazette reporter tweeted this morning : “I am told that Chinamasa's son has been arrested at Beitbridge border post with US $7million he was taking out of country.”
It is said that the officer who stumbled on the loot put his foot down, refusing to cut a deal and took him in. This, however, is unconfirmed.
This comes at a time when the country is battling with a cash crunch which, according to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) and the country’s Treasury, is caused by the illegally transfer of money out of the country through hard cash or wire.
However, instead of addressing the siphoning of money out of the country, the RBZ has ironically introduced bond notes ostensibly to address the cash crunch.
Despite their rejection, RBZ has announced that they (notes) will start circulating in August this year.
