Staff at a school in South Africa allegedly kept it a secret that some pupils were sick – and that may have led to the death of Jennifer Manyaka (7).
Children at Aurora Primary School, an independent boarding school in Bapsfontein, Ekurhuleni, were allegedly suffering from food poisoning for the whole of last week.
Daily Sun on Tuesday learned that officials from the education, health and social welfare departments as well as the police had visited the school to investigate.
Jennifer Malatjie (53), the aunt of the girl who died, has four kids at the school.
She said: "The school was planning to send the kids home last Friday without telling us anything."
"Pathologists in Bronkhorstspruit told us that Jennifer died from food poisoning, but they sent her body here last Friday for more tests," Jennifer said.
She claimed that the school had been giving sick pupils vinegar and pills in the hope that they would get better before they were sent home for the weekend.
Parent Owethu Mabuza also demanded answers. He has children in grade R and grade 1 at the school.
"We hope to know soon what made our kids sick," he said.
The education department's Charles Phahlane said: "The police have opened an inquest docket.
Apparently 11 children complained that they were sick.
Phahlane said the department was waiting for the results of the post mortem and some laboratory tests.
