A 16-year-old girl in South Africa has been left depressed and suicidal after she was gang raped and infected with HIV.
Two years ago a group of men forced their way into the house where she was living and took turns to rape her.
She survived with minor injuries but her life has fallen apart.
She has tried to commit suicide seven times.
Once she threw herself in front of a speeding and another time she took pills and had to be rushed to hospital by her older sister, foaming at the mouth.
She has tried to hang herself from a pole in her yard five times, but neighbours rescued her.
She wrote out a note and handed it to the Daily SunTeam and it read: "I was raped and given HIV, so I am going to die. It will be better for me to die before I get sick because I have no one to look after me. I have no idea where my mother is."
Her sister told Daily Sun that the teen has lost all will to live. She has distanced herself from her friends, and has suddenly become a heavy drinker.
"She has quit school and is very disrespectful to everyone, no matter how old," she said.
"She will sometimes disappear for weeks without telling us her where she is going."
Thuli has been in and out of hospital being treated for depression, but it does not seem to have helped her.
When she leaves hospital, she becomes withdrawn and then her wayward behaviour starts again.
"She told me that she is tired of living, so there is no need for her to be alive," said her sister.
Aids activist Gay Morema said he would arrange with a local HIV/Aids co-ordinator to intervene and counsel Thuli.
Social Development spokesman Ronny Masilela said social workers will be sent to the young girl's home and refer her to a specialist.
"We will need to work with her to restore her identity so that she gets a fresh mind about herself," he said.
