A two-year-old had her feet cut off by a lawn mower driven by her father in a tragic accident.
Thinking she was alerting him to something ahead, he backed up — shearing off both of their toddler Ireland Nugent's feet at the ankles and leaving one of her hands injured but intact.
Jeremiah Nugent's wife Nicole screamed frantically and waved her arms at him across their lawn in a desperate attempt to get his attention as he drove the powerful lawn mower.
Both Jeremiah and his wife, 31, tried to hold back the tractor as it rolled, police said.
"Once it came to a stop Nicole Nugent ran inside and called 911," the sheriff's office said in a release.
The little girl, 2, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital where she is receiving treatment, with her grief-stricken parents by her side.
Detectives with the Crimes Against Children Unit are investigating the incident.
They say the incident appears to have been accidental.
Such lawn mower accidents are tragically all too common.
The tragedy took place in the Westlake Village subdivision in Palm Harbor, Florida, about 7:30 Wednesday evening.
According to one report, each year more than 600 children undergo lawn mower-related amputations, said the Amputee Coalition of America.
Another puts the figure at about 800 children run over by riding mowers and 75 people killed — one in five of whom are children, according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission.
"No parent wants their child to be one of these statistics," said former CPSC Chairman Ann Brown. "Young children move quickly and are attracted to mowing activity, but they don't understand the dangers it poses."
