Drunken partier Tommy Lawson decided to steal a police car to get home in Scunthorpe, UK, after a night clubbing in Manchester.
The 30-year-old from Coventry was caught trying to steal the police car last month.
When later asked why he had done it, he merely said he was trying to get home.
District judge Daniel Curtis told the guilty man: ‘This was a drunken escapade, not a determined attempt to steal a vehicle.’
Although he admitted the offence, Mr Lawson defended himself through his lawyer by saying he was worse for wear after consuming a vast amount of alcohol.
He added he had become separated from his friend who had his train ticket and was stumped as to how he was going to get home.
The North Lincolnshire Council worker was fined £200 and will also have to pay a further £400 in costs and compensation.
