Brigadier Thandi Langa has said that police in Makwassie near Lebaleng, South Africa find it difficult to arrest suspects in the area because they use the sewage as an escape route.
Constables James Mafulako and Power Molao had responded to a tip-off about a gang operating in the area. When they went to investigate they saw five suspects bolt out of a shack.
The officers abandoned their vehicle in Mongale Street, in the North West, and tried to tread on stepping stones to get through the sewage.
After the unsuccessful chase, the cops searched the shack and found pangas, dagga and stolen copper cable.
“It’s not easy for police on foot to get through the sewage. Even our police vehicles struggle to drive through certain streets and areas in the location and this makes it easy for suspects to escape,” Langa said.
Kedibone Sefora, 70, a resident, said two manholes have been overflowing close to her yard since 2007.
Sana Matuoe, 32, a mother of three kids complained about sewage in her yard.
She said: “My youngest child suffers from TB. She is not allowed to play outside at all, because they usually end up playing in the human waste.”
Mayor Kgabi Gaanang of Makwassie Hills said a contractor has been appointed to investigate the matter.
