A 45-year-old Zimbabwean man from Hwedza fatally struck his parents with an axe handle on Wednesday following an altercation on how to store groundnuts at their homestead.
Richard Zenda pounced on his mother, Rezenia (79) and father, Enias (80), who were sitting in the same room.
Police said: "the incident occurred around 5pm at farm number 111 in Zviyambe North in Hwedza on March 6."
It is alleged that Rezenia took groundnuts into a room at the homestead for storage and Richard who is a known mental patient asked his she did so.
Richard left before returning to the room where his mother and father Enias Pamire Zenda were sitting.
"He was wielding a wooden axe handle which he used to strike his mother once on the head before she collapsed onto the ground. Richard turned to his father whom he struck once on the head before he also collapsed," said the police.
According to the police, some family members tried to intervene, but fled after being threatened.
The incident was reported to the police, Richard was arrested.
