The women from Ghana kasi, Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, South Africa no longer feel safe in their beds.
Nyaope smokers are sneaking into their bedrooms and fondling them while they are sleeping.
Nyaope is a volatile concoction.
The mix can include antiretroviral drugs designed to fight AIDS, rat poison, third grade heroin and cleaning detergents like VIM. All this is often laced together with marijuana.
It takes a matter of minutes before they get high.
It is believed there are tens of thousands of addicts now right across South Africa.
“I felt a soft touch gliding up and down my thighs,” a furious Mantwa Genese (53) told Daily Sun.
“At first I thought I was having a dream about a snake in my bedroom. Then I woke up to find a boy smelling of nyaope standing over me. He was dripping saliva. This is disgusting! He ran away,” she said.
On Tuesday more than 100 women and young men demonstrated their frustration at the local police station.
Residents said they have had problems with nyaope smokers for a long time but the cops don’t take them seriously.
They demanded that a thug that was caught cutting up zinc strips should be arrested and that what he had done be put on his record.
Jacob Matshoge (50), a resident, said: “We caught this nyaope smoker in our yard. He was carrying steel cutters.”
While residents were chanting slogans at the police station a police van arrived with the suspect, but he was later released.
Later the people declared that they might be forced to take the law into their own hands if the cops didn’t do something.
Colonel Sylvan Moonsamy said there wasn’t enough evidence against the man and no case could be opened.
“Some of the cases have no witnesses and are struck off the roll but I encourage people to call me should they have problems,” said Moonsamy.
