A video showing Mozambican Mido Macia tied to the back of a South African police car and dragged down the street has been released by
Daily Sun News.
(Scroll down for the video clip)Mido had initially argued with the cops about parking his taxi.
Some unverified reports claim that he was taken to the station where he was beaten to death.
When the trouble started a large crowd gathered around the taxi at a busy Daveyton, Ekurhuleni market.
The video shows the 27-year-old Macia being assaulted by cops.
Amid pleas for mercy from the crowd, the man is tied up with his back to the vehicle, his hands in the back of the van.
"They handcuffed him to the back of the van and slammed the door in his face. With blood running down his face they drove off," said a witness.
"He was in pain, he cried and asked the cops to stop but they continued anyway." Another man who also wants to remain anonymous said:
"If he was parked on the wrong side of the road, they were supposed to give him a ticket, not kill him." Macia's older sister, Rose Macia (29) could not speak as she was still devastated. The van was then driven away.
Some community members protested in front of the police station.
The taxi driver was later found dead at about 21.15 by another police officer.
The post mortem, according to the statement, said the cause of death was found to be head injuries with internal bleeding.
The dead man also had other injuries.
"The IPID is also investigating allegations that the deceased was dragged on the road with the police vehicle. The docket has since been changed to murder," said the statement.
