Samson Makhumbula of Kasibhejane in Mpumalanga, South Africa once had a good job and was a respectable man with a loving wife and kids.
But now the 78 years old man sleeps in a tiny shack built next to the same bedroom he used to share with his wife.
Things took a downward turn after he lost his job in 2005.
It is believed that he sunk into a deep depression after that.
Emmah Magagula (54) said Samson used to treat her like a queen when he was healthy and had a job.
"Now he has turned into a zombie who can't do anything for himself. I tried to help him, but he couldn't change the person that he had become and gave up," she said.
His family apparently lost all respect for him and eventually chucked him out of the house and built him a shack next to the bedroom.
"His sickness is causing this family too much stress. He wouldn't notice that he was walking around the house naked sometimes. I then kicked him out and I now share the room with my young grandkids," said Emmah.
He sleeps alone on a wet floor without a mat or blanket, tied to a chain so as to keep him stationary.
The elderly man often urinates and soils himself a neighbour said that the shack always smells unbearably.
Social Development spokesman Ronnie Masilela said officials would be sent to the family to assess the situation.
They will then take action based on their findings. Colonel Leonard Hlathi said cops would intervene only if a criminal element exists.
