Oscar Pistorius' girlfriend was apparently in a “close friendship” with Springbok Francois Hougaard, who is also close pals with the Paralympic gold medallist when she was shot dead.
Investigators are looking into whether Reeva’s friendship with Hougaard may have sparked the rows which were heard in the hours leading up to the shooting on Valentine’s Day.
Hougaard, 24, pulled out of playing for his rugby union side the Vodacom Bulls on Friday as speculation grew about his relationship with the slain FHM model.
The speculation was fuelled by Nelson Mandela’s personal assistant Zelda la Grange in a message placed on Twitter. She wrote: “Have you heard rumours about a rugby player alleged to be involved somehow? We all have.”
It was re-tweeted by respected South African journalist Barry Bateman to his 18,000 followers.
The player’s agent Lorinda Voges said: “Our client will not answer any questions regarding Reeva Steenkemp or Oscar Pistorius at this stage as this is still an ongoing investigation and this whole sad ordeal has got nothing to do with him.”
Meanwhile it has emerged that Pistorius carried his dying girlfriend from the bathroom where he allegedly shot her... then performed mouth-to-mouth in a frantic bid to save her.
Reeva was said to be still breathing when security guards and neighbours arrived at the Blade Runner’s home to find him cradling her in his arms.
But paramedics were unable to save her and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The 29-year-old model had been shot four times, in the head, chest and hand, through the bathroom door as she sat on the lavatory.
The horrific details of her final moments emerged in South Africa’s respected Beeld newspaper.
Paralympic gold medallist Pistorius, known as the Blade Runner because he runs on prosthetic legs, was said to be “numb with shock”. But he has vowed to fight the murder charge against him.
