Zimbabwean musician Energy Mutodi was briefly detained on Friday by the police for questioning by the police.
Superintendent Paul Nyathi of the Press and Public Relations Department of Police General Headquarters confirmed that Mutodi was detained briefly by the Harare Commercial Crimes Unit, assisting with investigations and was later released.
Supt Nyathi could not disclose the nature of the investigations or what crime Mutodi is alleged to have committed.
Apparently Mutodi was coming from the Civil Court where he had a pending maintenance case was spotted by a policewoman also a home-seeker he allegedly swindled.
The policewoman confronted Mutodi and ordered him to explain why the housing scheme had failed to provide stands on the stipulated time.
Mutodi is alleged to have become violent but was immediately apprehended by police details at the scene. Mutodi was taken to Harare Central Police Station for further investigations.
A police source yesterday confirmed the arrest and said Mutodi was still being questioned by the Commercial Crimes Unit at Harare Central Police Station. Police spokesperson Superintendent Paul Nyathi said investigations were in progress.
“We confirm that Mutodi has been questioned in a case which is currently under investigations by our Commercial Crimes Unit. More details will be released as the investigation continue,” he said.
According to some reports, he once faced arrest for allegedly swindling over 200 desperate home seekers and was alleged to have cheated potential home seekers out of US$200 000.
Mutodi has since denied the charges.
