State media reports that media analysts say the call by the President Robert Mugabe for the media to play its part in promoting national unity and cohesion is important as the fourth estate has been on the forefront of fanning hate language and divisions.
Zimbabwe's media which is heavily polarised has at times been accused of fanning divisions leading to political violence.
In his address at the opening of the 5th Session of the 7th Parliament of Zimbabwe, President Mugabe said the media should play its part in promoting national unity and desist from spreading hate speech which causes divisions in the country.
Media analyst, Dr Tafataona Mahoso says the fourth estate should report on issues that support the national objectives as enshrined in the constitution.
Another analyst, Mr Edward Tome says instead of spreading foreign agendas in the country, the local media's reportage should focus more on fostering peace and stability for the development of the nation.
President Mugabe also called for peace during the referendum and the forthcoming harmonised elections.
The Rwandan genocide of 1994 which claimed the lives of nearly a million people was fanned by a radio station.
As the country prepares for harmonised elections next year, analysts say the local media should put the country first and reports responsibly.
