A gold panner from Matabeleland North's Inyathi area was severely beaten and left for dead by a group of four armed robbers after they robbed him of $1 000.
Police in Matabeleland North confirmed the robbery.
Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese said the incident occurred on 23 June when two small-scale miners, Mr Ndodana Ncube (46) of Mahlabathini area, Inyathi and Mr Augustine Ndlovu (34) also of Inyathi were attacked by armed robbers while walking along Turk Mine- Gloag Road.
According to the police, the two three men walked fast towards and started a conversation when they caught up with them.
The fourth man way led from a distance.
"The man who was walking from behind picked a stone and struck Ncube on the head. He fell to the ground unconscious.
"Ndlovu took to his heels and the three assailants gave chase, throwing stones at him," she said.
They also fired a shot but missed the target.
Ndlovu went and reported the matter to the police but meanwhile the robbers were helping themselves to Ncube.
She said the robbers then returned to where Ncube lay
"Police attended the scene and found Ncube lying unconscious. The robbers had escaped.
Ncube was taken to Inyathi District Hospital and the value of cash and goods stolen is $1 100. Nothing was recovered.
Asst Insp Makonese said people should desist from carrying large sums of money and using secluded paths and the same time.
