A Mabvuku, 54, has been sentenced to 18 years in jail for raping and infecting his 13-year-old orphaned niece with an STI before threatening her with assault. Wilson Chingosho had denied the allegations when he appeared before Harare regional magistrate Sandra Mpundu but was convicted after a full trial.
State counsel Tinashe Kanyemba proved that sometime in April last year, Chingosho entered the spare bedroom where the minor was seated on the bed with her sister. He reportedly sent the minor's sister to go to the nearby shops to buy bread and the minor remained in the room whilst Chingosho proceeded to the dining room.
A few minutes later, Chingosho returned to the spare bedroom and found the minor in blankets. He reportedly lifted the blankets and shut her mouth with his palm and forcibly undressed her before raping her. The court heard that after violating the minor, Chingosho threatened her with assault for her not to reveal the matter and she went outside the house crying whilst BLEEDING. The court also heard that her foster mother asked the little girl about an STI she had developed and she revealed that Chingosho had raped her.
Passing the sentence, the magistrate said Chingosho took advantage of the fact that the minor was an orphaned teenager being looked after by her foster mother. The magistrate noted that Chingosho had violated the trust the minor had bestowed in him as her uncle. Chingosho was slapped with 18 years imprisonment before four years were set aside for five years on condition of good behaviour. The remaining 14 years will be effective.
