When Weng Yulang, 36, took on his sister Linqiusha's lover Chuan Shun, a vicious fight ensued.
Weng told Daily Sun: "I got a call that Chuan had beaten up my sister."
So he drove about 350km from Polokwane, Limpopo, to the shopping mall in Thulamahashe near Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, South Africa.
Weng said: "When I arrived at the shop I slapped Chuan.
"His assistant charged at me with an iron bar and a hammer."
Shocked customers watched as Chuan and the assistant pounced on Weng as he tried to run away.
He got caught up in hanging clothes, dolls and other things in the shop.
With an iron bar and a hammer the two angry men beat him until he was lying passed out in a pool of his own blood.
Crying Linqiusha tried to rescue her brother, but she was also beaten.
Customers called security guards who rescued the brother and sister but the attackers fled in a Nissan X-Trail station wagon.
Weng said: "This man has been abusing my sister for a long time.
"If it wasn't for the guards he would have killed me."
But Chuan told the People's Paper: "I'm not afraid. I'm a man and ready for anything."
Linqiusha won't lay a charge against her lover. She said she feared it might harm their relationship.
Vusi Hlatshwayo, a security officer at the mall, said: "Customers' lives were at risk."
