Interested buyers came from far and wide to try and buy Julius Malema's half-built mansion in Sandton on Friday.
It took less than half an hour to sell the former ANC youth leader's property for R5,9 million. That was more than what the auctioneers expected!
Afterwards, Malema tweeted: "I'm all smiles. I have a deep feeling of hope and I know that life is a blessing. They will never capture my soul and my ideas. I remain resolute, salute."
The successful bidder was Norman Tloubatla, CEO of Magnified Designs, a company based in Fourways, Johannesburg.
Soon after signing the papers, Tloubatla drove off in a white Porsche.
He refused to be interviewed. His company supplies public display signs in Mzansi and internationally.
Auctioneer Pieter Geldenhuys praised the three-storey mansion, saying it is everything a house buyer could want.
The house plan has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a cinema, cigar lounge, pool, spa bath, wine cellar, coffee bar and a lift.
Geldenhuys said the property attracted a lot of inquiries from people in Mzansi and overseas.
At first nobody showed any interest when the auctioneer called for bids to start at R5 million. But when the offer price fell to R2 million, bidders began to compete, driving the price up.
The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ordered the attachment and sale of the house to help cover Malema's R16 million tax bill.
Malema bought the property in 2009 for R3,6m and knocked down the house to make way for his modern dream mansion.
In January sheriffs confiscated Malema's homes in Sandton and Polokwane.
On 19 March the asset forfeiture unit seized Malema's furniture and his farm in Limpopo, said to be worth R4 million.
