Harare municipality has decided to go ahead with a decision that will infringe on the people's right to water after they revealed that they will be installing pre-paid water meters in every household.
The council began installation in May, as part of a pilot study to determine the feasibility of the gadgets.
The move to install prepaid water meters was rejected in Bulawayo, following protests from residents on the violation of their right to water.
Speaking after a tour of some suburbs in which the installation of water meters has been carried out so far, Harare City spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme said the authority would soon roll out full scale installations.
“Financially, prepaid water meters will ensure that instead of defaulting people pay off their bills prior to receiving service which will give us the financial muscle we need to invest back into our water system and thus improve its quality and availability”, said Chideme.
However the Harare council has been questioned on the capability of residents to pay their water bills as 80% of residents in Harare are unemployed and without an income.
Zimbabwe is curresntly being faced with large unemployment numbers with a great margin surviving on close to nothing.
The pilot roll out of prepaid water meters was being carried out in suburbs such as Kambuzuma, Letombo, Avenues, Rhodesville and Eastlea among others.
