AN 18-YEAR-OLD Gwanda man assaulted a police officer for trying to handcuff him, the court yesterday.
Mthokozisi Dube of house number 30Jahunda Township in Gwanda Town assaulted a police officer, Constable Carlton Ngonidzashe Mpako during his arrest after attempts to run away.
Mpako was in the company of another police officer, a Const Sibanda when they arrested Dube for an offense he had committed on the previous day.
Dube told magistrate Sheila Nazombe that he made a mistake by assaulting a police officer.
"We were inside our house when I attempted to run away.
I don't even know why I ran away.
I just ran away.
"When I turned around trying to flee, I hit him (Mpako) with my elbow.
I made a mistake in committing this offence," he said.
Prosecuting, Getrude Zvidzai said on Monday this week at around 6.50am, Const Mpako and Const Sibanda went to Dube's place dressed in police uniform and found him together with his twin brother and two other family members.
They indicated to Dube that he was under arrest together with his twin brother, Mthabisi, for assaulting Mthabisi Ndlovu the previous day.
When the police officers tried to handcuff Dube, he got angry and started shouting at the top of his voice saying that he was not going to allow the police officers to handcuff him.
He suddenly hit Const Mpako with his elbow once on the left cheek and ran out of the house but was later caught by the police officers, the court heard.
The two police officers fell over the ground as Dube vehemently resisted to be handcuffed.
The court heard that the police officers managed to handcuff Dube after he was persuaded by his mother to be cooperative.
"People like the accused person (Dube) who assault police officers are very dangerous.
They can even commit serious offences such as killing police officers," said Zvidzai.
The magistrate said Dube had committed a serious offence as he showed lack of respect of the law as police officers had to chase after him in order to effect an arrest.
"If at 18 you are going to be a problem with police officers arresting you, then we wonder what you are going to be like in future.
"This is not a bundu, we have laws to abide by so behave like a civilized person.
If you behave like an animal, you will be treated like an animal," said Nazombe.
Dube was sentenced to six months imprisonment which was wholly suspended on condition that he performed 210hours community service at the Gwanda Magistrates Court starting on Monday.
