A 27-year-old shameless man will spend the next 20 years in prison after he was convicted of raping his seven-month-old relative.
The Mhondoro man (name withheld to protect the infant's identity) was convicted of rape by regional magistrate Mr Hosiah Mujaya after a full trial.
He denied the charges, but the State led by Mrs Kudzai Chigwedere proved a solid case against him.
Mr Mujaya sentenced the man to an effective 20-year jail term.
On July 27, the infant's mother went to fetch water and left her baby who was sleeping in a hut in the man's custody.
Upon noticing that the infant's mother was out of sight, the man sneaked into the hut where the baby was sleeping.
He removed her napkin, raped her then fell asleep beside her with his blood stained clothes.
When the infant's mother returned from the borehole, she saw the baby crying and discovered that she was bleeding.
She then alerted other villagers who teamed up and apprehended the man before surrendering him to the police.
A medical examination which was conducted on the baby established that the baby suffered a massive tear.
