An elderly woman was found by her son sitting cross-legged on the floor with her head in the bowl of rice.
She had a rope tightly knotted around her neck and blood was coming out of her mouth and nose and had been dead for some time.
Bhekabona Lembede (45) had gone to a traditional ceremony on Sunday evening at his neighbour's place near his home in Nkomokazi in Umbumbulu, south of Durban.
He knew his mother Emelia (85) was preparing rice for dinner.
When he left his neighbour's place, he took some meat for his mother knowing she would enjoy it with the rice.
But as he opened the door he saw bloodstains at the doorstep - and then he found his mother.
Relative Zandile Ngcobo (37) told Daily Sun the neighbours heard Bhekabona crying out for help and quickly rushed to see what was happening.
"Gogo Emelia was cold. When we pulled her head out of the pot, blood was pouring out of her mouth and nose," Zandile said.
"There are no signs that gogo was raped. We are still waiting for the post mortem results."
Captain Thulani Zwane said a case of murder was opened at Umbumbulu Police Station.
"Cops are investigating. No arrest has been made," Zwane said.
