A 42-year-old adulterous man from Masvingo, Zimbabwe was ordered to pay $740 as damages after being found guilty of engaging in an extra marital relationship with a neighbour's wife.
Freddy Makopa of Chivanhu Village was convicted on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before Chief Nemamwa on Wednesday.
He was ordered to compensate the husband after he was caught being intimate with his wife, Anna Manjoro.
In passing judgement, Chief Nemamwa said Makopa had deprived the man in a bigger and painful way and deserved a deterrent sentence.
"You have deprived an innocent man of his wife and for that you have to be punished. You deserve a deterrent sentence so that we send a clear message to would be offenders.
"There are a number of unmarried woman whom you can propose but you acted like a bull and opted for someone's wife. I do not want to tolerate such nuisance in my area," he said.
In mitigation Makopa told the chief's court that the woman had made him believe she had divorced her husband.
He said he only realised that she was still married when he was confronted by the husband.
However, Chief Nemamwa argued that Makopa knew about the status of his lover because he always saw her walking with the husband.
"You are lying that you thought your lover had divorced her husband. When you were caught, you had met her walking with the husband the previous day and to claim that the couple had divorced or separated is trying to hide behind a finger," said Chief Nemamwa.
On the fateful day sometime in August but on a date unknown to the court the two lovebirds whose relationship is believed to have been going on for a long time were caught red-handed in Makopa's bedroom.
Makopa's homestead is near Manjoro's. On the fateful day Makopa hid Manjoro under his bed.
The chief's court heard that the husband got a tip- off from one of Makopa's children that the two were having 'good time' at the latter's home.
The husband then went straight to Makopa's homestead where on arrival he knocked on the bedroom door.
When the door was opened after what some time, Makopa pretended to be alone but the husband lifted the bed and found Manjoro coiled like a snake underneath with no clothes on.
Makopa tried to take to his heels but the woman's husband quickly got hold of him and started beating him up with utensils which he found in the room.
He took some property that included a bicycle and a radio as evidence.
A report was made to the chief and Makopa was served with summons to appear before the court by the chief's aide.
