Flora Phokwane (60) from Braamfischerville in Soweto, South Africa, said that her grandson found what looked like a piece of rotten meat in their yard but turned out to be a dead baby.
Flora's grandson told her that a dog had left it there and when she went to have a look herself, it was a mutilated baby.
She then called residents to the scene.
"It was difficult to tell whether it was a boy or a girl because the bottom part of the body was missing.
"I think the baby was dragged into our yard from the bush by the dog," said Flora.
When they found out what had happened, the community was very angry and gathered at the scene.
The baby was later put into a box and taken away in a mortuary van.
Flora said: "If the mum didn't want the baby, she could have left it at someone's house instead of dumping it."
Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela confirmed that a baby's body was found and an inquest docket was opened.
"The body had no arms and the bottom part of it was also missing," he said.
Makhubela said they believe that the mum tried to burn the remains of the body, but a dog dragged it out of the fire.
