A devious mortgage adviser who stole an entire luxury kitchen – including the sink – from two clients has been jailed for nine months.

Darren Newton, 40, was told he had carried out "a monstrous breach of trust" when he took the appliances from the home of Andrew and Michelle Milton.

He had advised the couple to give up their five-bedroom house, as it was in danger of being repossessed due to mortgage arrears, and move to rented home.

Scheming Newton told the Miltons, both 48, to hand him the keys to pass on to mortgage company Virgin Money.

But the calculating crook paid two tradesmen to enter the house and strip the kitchen.

They took an oven, cooking hob, utility room units and even the kitchen sink, as well as a £500 gas fire.

But Mr Milton went to visit his home one last time and was flabbergasted when he saw the kitchen in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, had gone.

Police arrested former RAF serviceman Newton after tracing the workmen told to remove the kitchen.

Officers discovered all the stolen items stashed in the thief's garage, ready to be installed in his own £500,000 home.

Prosecutor Alistair Munt told Lincoln crown court the removal of the items cut the value of the property from £265,000 to £250,000 and left the Miltons devastated.

Newton, of Evedon, claimed he had been given the couple's permission to remove the items. He was ordered to pay £6,800 compensation to his victims.

Passing sentence, Judge Sean Morris told him: "They turned to you for help at a very difficult time.

"You told them to move out of their house, rent a property and you would return the keys.

"What you did was to help yourself to the property in that house. You removed a large and very expensive kitchen.

"You tried to persuade Mr Milton from pursuing the matter. It shows what a slippery customer you really are.

"A further demonstration of that... is you tried to lie your way out of it.

"There is such a monstrous breach of trust only an immediate custodial sentence can result."

The judge issued a plea that Virgin Money should not charge the Miltons the legal costs for obtaining possession of their old home.

He said: "If anybody should be charged it is this defendant."

Mr Milton described the moment he discovered the theft, saying: "It took a minute to sink in and then I realised the whole kitchen was missing.

"It was total disbelief."

Newton's lawyer Sunil Khanna said his business has been "decimated".

He has been banned by the Financial Conduct Authority.
