The
six-year-old boy left blind after his eyes were gouged out keeps asking his family "why is it dark?"
The boy, known by his surname Guo, is receiving treatment in China after being found covered in blood in the street.
Guo, who will never see again, was first thought to have been the victim of organ traffickers wanting to sell his corneas.
But his eyeballs were found nearby – and police confirmed the corneas were intact.
Police are now trying to discover a motive for the sickening attack in Fenzi, in the northern province of Shanxi.
The boy's uncle said today: "He asks why the sky is always dark and why the dawn still hasn't come."
"We could only tell him that his eyes had some injury and have to be bandaged."
He was drugged and lost consciousness before the attacker removed his eyes, China Central TV told viewers.
Police have offered a $15,500 reward for information leading to an arrest of the lone suspect.
The attack has caused outrage across China, with one user of Sina Weibo, the country's version of Twitter, writing: "This is extraordinarily vicious.
"How and why could someone be so cruel?"
