A Gweru man facing a domestic violence charge stunned the court when he said he just "felt like throwing punches" at his wife for no reason.

The man, Alois Mutsvanga, of Mkoba Village Four, had been caught by his wife being intimate with his lover in the couple's matrimonial bedroom.

Mutsvanga appeared before Gweru magistrate Miss Rutendo Machine on Tuesday facing a charge of assaulting his wife, Ms Siphathisiwe Mnkandla.

He pleaded guilty. During cross-examination, Mutsvanga told the court that he did not know why he assaulted his wife but only realised that he was beating her when neighbours entered their house to restrain him.

Miss Muchena then fined Mutsvanga $200 for the offence.

For the State, Mr Bernard Nyoni told the court that on 6 August, Mutsvanga and his wife, Ms Mnkandla decided to visit their relative who resides in Mandindindi Plots along the Gweru-Mvuma highway.

The court heard that Mutsvanga, a security guard with Sino Zimbabwe Cement Company then told his wife to board a lift to the area.

He indicated to his wife that he would follow her shortly aboard a company staff bus which passed through the area which is near Sino-Zimbabwe Cement Company.

Mr Nyoni said Ms Mnkandla got a lift to Mandindindi plots but dropped along the highway and waited for Mutsvanga so that they would walk to their relative's place together.

The court heard that Ms Mnkandla then decided to return home after realising that Mutsvanga was not turning up.

Mr Nyoni said on arriving home, Ms Mnkandla went to her bedroom where she then found Mutsvanga being intimate with another woman. On seeing his wife, Mutsvanga went on to punch her without justifying why he was assaulting her.

He was later restrained from further assaulting Ms Mnkandla by neighbours. Ms Mnkandla went on to report the matter to the police leading to Mutsvanga's arrest.
