A landlord from Bulawayo's Kingdale suburb set his tenant's property alight while trying to burn a snake that had strayed into his yard.
Nkundleni Tshuma appeared before Bulawayo magistrate in Zimbabwe, Ms Marylyn Mutshina for negligently damaging his former tenant, Mr Johnson Gumbochuma's property.
The court heard that sometime last year, Nanziwe Tshabalala and Gumbochena's wife whose name was not given at court, removed Gumbochena's welding machine and put it near a rubbish pit after they had spotted a snake entering a room.
Tshuma set alight the rubbish which was in the rubbish pit where the snake had allegedly hid and the fire allegedly spread to the property setting it ablaze.
Although the value of destroyed property could not be ascertained, it is estimated to be above $1000.
The court was told that the property that was destroyed included electric cables, adapters, two drilling machines, a sanding machine, leather gloves, a set of screw driver and sofa springs with a combined value of $874.
Mr Gumbochuma told the court that Tshuma had replaced property valued at $110 only.
He made a report to the police leading to Tshuma's arrest.
