Approximately 650 Red Hill shack dwellers in Durban North, SA, left homeless on Saturday have now been sheltered.

When the shacks caught fire, more than 320 were completely destroyed.

Ethekwini municipality has provided them with temporary tents. Some have been placed in community halls.

The municipality's Thabo Mofokeng said they were going to speed up the housing project to ensure these people have decent houses before the end of the year.

"We have already visited the area to see the damage. We found almost 200 children with no school uniforms or food to eat," said Mofokeng.

He said they were going to keep these residents in tents and community halls for a short while.

It is alleged the fire was caused by a candle in one of the shacks.

Resident Njabulo Nkosi (36) told Daily Sun the fire then went on to take in the nearby shacks.

"We are very excited that the municipality has accommodated us in temporary tents and nearby community halls.

"Our children have lost their books and school uniforms. We appeal to anyone who might have means of helping us to please extend a hand. All our belongings were burned, including food.

"Fortunately no one was injured," said Njabulo.
