A 29-year-old man from Plumtree, Zimbabwe, was fined $100 for stealing two loaves of bread in a car.
Mimina Ncube of Ntoli village was hauled before Plumtree magistrate Gideon Ruvedza for theft.
The accused allegedly stole two loaves and other valuables in Paul Mpofu's car that was parked.
Ncube begged for the court's leniency. He said he broke into the complainant's car with the intention of only taking away bread which he had spotted inside because he wanted to provide food to his family.
He said he was driven to steal other valuables he found in the car because of his desperate situation.
Ncube was convicted on his own plea guilty to stealing and was ordered to restitute the complainant.
In case of default he was sentenced to 20 days imprisonment.
Ncube committed the offence on 28 July.
The court heard that Ncube went to Sibanda's homestead in Huwana Village at about 8pm and forced open the rear window of the car, which was parked in the yard.
Ncube stole two loaves which he had spotted and went on to steal a Nokia cell phone and cash amounting to 150 rand.
The following day at about 7am, Sibanda discovered the theft and followed footprints which he found around his car to Ncube's homestead in the next village.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Ncube's arrest.
The stolen property was valued at $47.40 and only that valued at $30 was recovered.
